In today’s news, regional union in West Africa gives funds to Ghana to support recovery from recent floods. Study finds over 12,000 flora and fauna species affected by mining operations worldwide, US scientists develop fully recyclable elastic thread for the textile industry, India supports Bhutan’s development vision through funding for health collaborations and more, 13-year-old American student invents unique method to remove pesticides from fresh produce, Finnish vegan food and beverage company broadens offerings of vegan drinks and yogurt, and Japanese animal-people hospital becomes sanctuary for quake survivors and beloved companions.

I have a gardening tip for you today. Fertilizer can give plants a boost, but too much can cause fertilizer burn, which damages roots and scorches leaves. Yellowing or browning foliage, wilting, and streaks on lawns following recent application can all be signs of excess fertilizer. To prevent it, follow recommended application rates, consider slow-release fertilizer or compost, avoid getting fertilizer on wet leaves, and water plants thoroughly after fertilizing. Avoid fertilizing during very dry conditions, when salts can become concentrated in the soil, and test your soil before adding extra nutrients. If you’ve overfertilized, manually remove excess fertilizer, if possible, then flush the soil with plenty of water to help dilute and wash away excess salts. A little fertilizer can help plants thrive, but more isn’t always better!

A joyful celebration is just around the corner because the joke of the day is here, entitled, “Weighty Concerns.”

During his annual checkup, Lukas stepped on the scale and frowned.

“Doctor, should I be worried about my weight?”

“Only if gravity stops working.”
